USFirst STR Workshop Today I participated in the Science of Teaching Reading Workshop lead by James Owings. He began with a quick overview of each domain. Then started with some simple warm-up questions so we could get an understanding of the question style. From there we dove into more challenging questions. He reminded us that for each question we would have at least a minute to answer. Once the opportunity for us to put our answers in the chat was done, he went through and explained the rationale for the answers. Towards the end of the workshop, he chose different people to explain their rationale's. I could tell he was very intentional about the questions he created. I felt challenged. When he provided feedback on why an answer was right or wrong, it was extremely helpful. It was another layer of studying that I needed. I study individually, but there is just something about dialogue with another individual that helps to make connections. The discussion piece is huge for me. I know many times I second guess myself and get things wrong. Hearing another perspective from someone who's highly knowledgeable in this area was very beneficial. I would definitely participate in another one. Lastly, I felt having us do our best to answer in 1-2 minutes was like a mini preparation for the exam. I realize that is something I need to start prepping myself for mentally. My main focus has been understanding content, but that is definitely important too. I want to end with some potential ideas for future workshops. -Maybe consider sending like 5 questions out to those who register and have them read the questions ahead of time and be ready to explain their rationale on the day of to maximize time. -To mix things up in the workshop in addition to what you're already doing have a small part of it be a matching activity in which we have to match the instructional strategy to the learning goal. For example, if I am a teacher who wants my students to learn to organize their ideas, I may teach them how to use a graphic organizer. If I want to teach comprehension, I may teach strategies on making inferences, and so on. Again, thanks for taking time out to do the workshop, I hope this helps.

USTutoringEZ has helped many teachers… TutoringEZ has helped many teachers with their certification exam. They are a video focused business so if you enjoy learning through videos, you’ll enjoy TutoringEZ! The flashcards and practice tests are also a nice recent addition to what they offer.
