USIt’s, like, all about the music, man. Can ya dig? I’ve tinkered on the piano for a long time but I wouldn’t say I actually play. I’m finally trying to change that, so that’s how I ended up at Cornell Academy. I’ve gone through the intro to music theory course and am finishing up the piano jumpstart, and I really enjoy Charles’ teaching style. He’s very engaging and explains things in a way that is clear and easy to understand. In the piano jumpstart course in particular I got a little bit of a Bob-Ross-for-Piano vibe (I mean that in the best possible way since I love Bob Ross and used to paint with his lessons years ago). I found the course almost relaxing in a way. I’d be there just playing with chords and listening to the sounds, and really just having fun at the piano. I’m much more interested in learning jazz piano than classical, so the content I’ve seen so far is kinda perfect for me. Aside from the courses and actual content, the support is really phenomenal too. I had a minor technical issue and reached out to them through the website and they could not have been more helpful (thanks Matt!). They’d get 10 stars from me if I could give it. I’m really happy I found the academy and definitely recommend it for anyone getting into piano. I’m not sure if this is the right place for this, but one thing I’d love to see is a follow on course to piano jumpstart where Charles takes maybe a couple to a handful of songs from the (awesome) song list they provide that has all of the chord progressions, and show how someone might go from the chord progression to an actual song that sounds interesting. There are tons of songs with the same chord progression C-G-Am-F, but they also sound very different. It would be awesome to see Charles go through a couple songs and show how he would expect a student to take the chord progression and turn it into the song. I love going to dueling piano bars and I think it would be awesome and so much fun to be able to play and sing some popular songs the way those players do. Anyway, overall I just really enjoy the academy. As I wrap up the piano jumpstart I’m starting on the intro to piano course and I’ll probably check out the harmony 101 course as well. I’ve been “addicted” to learning chess for the past few years, and I think music might be taking over haha. There’s just too much good stuff to learn!
