It prevents that from happening. I used the video to instal mine and… I used the video to instal mine and that made it very easy for me, I did not use the spacers for my microwave. It looks great and it does capture ALL of the smoke coming from the burners. I now get released into the house the filtered smoke which is so much better than before, I now do not have yellow greasy cabinets above and near the microwave. My microwave exhaust does not release to the outside.
