Compass VanLines provided a binding estimate but gave the moving to the lowest bidder, Mover VanLines Compass VanLines provided a binding estimate for my move from Texas to Florida. They then arranged for Mover Van Lines to do the moving. Mover Van Lines picked up my furniture in League City and trucked it to a warehouse in Dallas where it stayed several weeks and was then put on an interstate mover and sent to Miami where it was again put into a warehouse and then delivered to my new home in Jacksonville, Florida. Nearly every item was scratched, broken, bent, or abraded, and everything was covered with a layer of sand/dirt. The pickup was performed by 3 men in a rented truck. The delivery was made by one man in a plain unmarked truck with the furniture unprotected by quilted moving blankets. After bringing the furniture to my apartment the delivery man disappeared, without reassembly of items disassembled on pickup and without giving me a delivery bill of lading, any receipt, or even a valid phone number where I could follow-up with him to get the delivery bill of lading. I believe he was so embarrassed by the extent of the damage that he fled. I contacted Mover VanLines with a list of damaged and missing items and was referred to their alternative dispute handler, Claims Services International, Inc. (CSI). CSI then was supposed to adjudicate my claims for the $0.60/lb maximum liability. However, CSI then turned the missing delivery bill of lading onto me by saying that since I did not note any damaged items on the delivery bill of lading the carrier had no liability for negligent handing! CSI also asked for pictures of damaged goods and proof of weight for each damaged item, then noted that many of the damaged items were damaged only in appearance and were still functional, so disallowed the token compensation. However, if a picture did not show any damage but the item did not function, damage for that item was also disallowed. In many cases the pictures which I made were not of professional quality and apparently did not show damages sufficiently clearly to warrant my claim. Most of my furniture was purchased in 2005 when I moved to Texas, but several of the furniture company were out of business so it was very difficult to find a published weight for the exact item. CSI would not accept the weight I measured using one or two bathroom scales. CSI instead used what they call an industry "standard" weight for those items, always much less than the actual weight that I was able to weigh in my apartment. I disputed the settlement CSI proposed and submitted additional evidence to support my claims. However, CSI's dispute system is a sham, they did not pay any attention to and probably did not even read my supporting materials. My advice to any person planning a move is, DO NOT USE A COORDINATOR/FACILITATOR as is Compass Van Lines. They have no vested interest in the goods you entrust to them. It is easier to simply throw your treasured furniture into a truck operated by the lowest bidder, then when you seek even token compensation for damaged goods, refer you to an "Arbitration Shield", such as CSI, to run a sham adjudication process to avoid paying you even the token liability amount allowed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. My goods were loaded on or off a truck six times and received much damage. Only use a mover where your goods are loaded once, then delivered directly to your new home. Avoid Compass and avoid Mover Van Lines
