About Discovery Voyages

Offering high quality 3 - 6 day cruises with a maximum of 12 guests on the historic Discovery in beautiful Prince William Sound, Alaska (just south of the largest Alaskan city, Anchorage). We do offer a handful of trips that incorporate Denali National Park as well. Prince William Sound encompasses 3,800 miles of coastline to explore via kayak and foot. The Sound is home to the densest concentration of tidewater glaciers in the world, containing 50 glaciers and 17 tidewater glaciers (touching the ocean), known for dramatically calving huge ice chunks into the sea. Enjoy spectacular views from sea level up to 13,000 ft mountain peaks. More than 220 species of birds (and around 200,000 seabirds summer in the Sound), along with 30 species of land mammals, and at least a dozen marine mammal species make this area quite special. Resident marine mammals include humpback, sei, fin, minke, killer whales, and dall's porpoise as well as Steller sea lions, harbor seals, and sea otters. In western Prince William Sound, black bears may be seen on narrow beaches and are most often seen fishing when the salmon are spawning.

Unique and flawless A flawless, personalised small-boat voyage through one of the US’ most beautiful wildernesses - in fact the only one of its kind… what more can I say?

Wonderful beyond my expectations Our Discovery voyage was wonderful beyond my high expectations. Dean, Megan, Hugh, and Matt are knowledgeable, friendly, and totally dedicated to helping their guests have fun and learn a lot. I had worried that having 12 passengers on a small boat with 2 bathrooms would be stressful, but nope: The boat and the activities are so well organized that it was relaxing, even peaceful sometimes. The Sound is an awe-inspiring place, and this voyage is a fantastic introduction. We kayaked and hiked, we saw glaciers and wildlife, and some of the best time was just hanging out on the boat. And of course the food is totally spectacular. At every single meal, three times a day.

The difference between five and four The difference between five and four, for me, is the changes made by having cruise ships in PWS.

The trip of a lifetime! The owners of the Discovery, Dean and Meg, were so accommodating and helpful. Dean got a sense for what the group wanted to do and tried to cater to everyone's interest and activity level. The two guides, Phyllis and Hugh, were extremely knowledgeable and fun to be around. We did a lot, saw a lot, learned a lot, and in general had an amazing week. Meg worked her magic for three meals a day in the kitchen and the food was fantastic with lots of fresh seafood and accommodations for everyone's dietary restrictions. I loved that there was a lot of quiet time to read or sit outside and take in the magnificent scenery. I would highly recommend this trip for anyone who is okay staying on a small boat. My husband and I are not large people and we are reasonably fit so we were fine. But it would not work well for someone who has difficulty with stairs or climbing into a bunk bed.
