Excellent technical support from Steve @ Apps4Rent I've been wrestling with Microsoft not freeing up old 365 tenant names for some time. This resulted in my having a temporary tenant name for some years. Micirosoft has changed it's policy and practice, so I took another crack at it. After a series of interactions with Apps4Rent and Microsoft 365 Support, Steve, from Apps4Rent sorted it out - including a whole lot of related/consequential issues. I'm confident that the final step - correcting the SharePoint subdomain to reflect the corrected tenant name - will get sorted off-line.

Stellar customer service/onboarding experience! the technician that helped me, Scott, was very patient and explained everything clearly, and did not mind repeating things for me. he also answered every question I had and made sure I was ready to start working using my new virtual desktop, just as I normally work on my local desktop.
