About Vermont Federal Credit Union

Vermont Federal Credit Union was founded in 1953 as the Burlington Postal Employees Credit Union. Just a short time later, the Credit Union was renamed to the U.S. Government Employees Credit Union of Chittenden County. Our connection to these roots remains strong as many government employees in Vermont are still loyal members of Vermont Federal. In 1990, members voted to convert the Credit Union from a state charter to a federal charter, and we became Vermont Federal Credit Union in 1991. After a series of expansions and mergers, we became a community chartered credit union in 2001, which meant that membership was no longer limited to only government employees. We now operate under a community charter, opening the possibility of membership to anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in a variety of Vermont counties, as well as any of their family members. Those counties include: Chittenden, Grand Isle, Franklin, Lamoille, Washington, Caledonia, Orange, Orleans, and Addison.

Solid bank, needs some improvements I’ve had my checking and savings accounts here for years. I was initially attracted by their Rewards Checking account. I now use cash back credit cards instead of doing all the POS debit transactions because I end up earning more that way than the interest on the Rewards Checking. I’ve still kept my accounts there though and have been pretty satisfied. The mobil app is pretty good and the online banking is good. It also has a feature where you can instantly transfer money to another VTFCU customer if you “add” them (requires some info from the person in order to add them). I wish VTFCU had a green/socially responsible banking initiative where our savings could be focused on helping make Vermonters save energy, water (and therefore money), improve the sustainability and carbon storage in agriculture, etc. I found a better auto loan rate at NEFCU, so recommend checking there. The staff at the VTFCU branch I go to have always been friendly and helpful and I have appreciated their COVID safety protocols. I am distresses to read that another reviewer experienced racism here. As far as I can currently remember I’m not aware of VTFCU taking a visible stance against racism, and other issues of oppression and exclusion/discrimination (other than legally required equal lending statements). It sounds like there needs to be additional training and accountability for staff to consciously fight against racism and its effects. Maybe there should be an affirmative action plan as well to improve the diversity of staff. Everyone should be able to bank here and be treated with respect, care, and equally. Maybe there could also be a newsletter series on the history of the credit union, including both good and bad/hard parts of the story.

Above and Beyond The Vermont Federal Credit Union always goes above and beyond to provide excellent customer service. The personal attention and assistance I have received with recent transactions deserves a 6-star rating.

I would give zero stars if I could I would give zero stars if I could, they decreased my credit line on my visa credit card and I have a 767 score. I called and they said we lowered because you pay off balance a lot ? What does that even mean. I think what happend was Lori and that other women were on a power trip and retaliated against me from a Domestic wire inside earlier that week. I gave them several times to check their selves and they did not. Another thing I noticed is they hire only women for the most part why is that? And zero minority essential. They are official not existent to me, as Liqudated all my assets with them and since I’m in the military I opened a navy federal account. They called me and offered me several things right out the gate a new Credit Card with a very generous line of credit. A personal line of credit I pay back as I go and is available when I need it. Don’t stay with Vermont federal is where I am going with this you are not a name there you are a member number that is it. This occurred when they started renting and buying buildings and adding more locations. Now they’re no better than the Big Banks. very sad. Thank you for being better than Vermont Federal credit union, navy federal credit union is number 1 the best.
